Indian River claims playoff thriller

PHILADELPHIA — Junior Malinoski converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute for his second goal of the game to lift the eighth-seeded Indian River boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Carthage in a Section 3 Class A first round game Tuesday night.

Jacob LaClair made 18 saves for the Warriors (12-5), including stopping the Comets’ Tyler Biolsi on a breakaway with four seconds left. Indian River will play top-seeded Fowler at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Corcoran High School in Syracuse.

Biolsi scored, and Sebastian Fountain stopped 21 shots for Carthage (7-9).

SOUTH JEFFERSON 1, HOLLAND PATENT 0

Jordan Schloop scored the game-winner in the 31st minute as the sixth-seeded Spartans edged the No. 11 Golden Knights in a Class B first-round game in Adams.

Schloop headed in the ball off a direct kick from Zach Lanzar for South Jefferson, which advances to play in the quarterfinal round at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at No. 3 Skaneateles (11-3-2).

Goalie William Beese made four saves to register the shutout against Holland Patent (7-9-1).

MARCELLUS 9, GENERAL BROWN 2

Nate Waite generated four goals and an assist as the eight-seeded Mustangs routed the No. 9 Lions in a Class B first round game at Marcellus.

Tom McNaney supplied a hat trick for Marcellus (9-8-1).

Adam Vodicka and Anthony VanTassel scored for General Brown (5-10-2).

LOWVILLE 3, FRANKFORT-SCHUYLER 2 (OT)

Noak Ahlberg scored in the first overtime period to lift the third-seeded Red Raiders to a come-from-behind Class C first-round victory over the Knights (6-9-2) at Lowville.

Ahlberg also scored on a penalty kick for Lowville (12-3-2), and Ian Collins scored to tie the game at two goals apiece in the 53rd minute. The Red Raiders trailed 2-0 five minutes into the game.

They will host No. 6 Mt. Markham (10-5-2) in the quarterfinals Friday at a time to be determined.

THOUSAND ISLANDS 4, HERKIMER 0

Scott McKain scored three goals as the seventh-seeded Vikings blanked the No. 10 Magicians in a Class C first-round game at Clayton.

Luke Smith contributed a goal and an assist for Thousand Islands (11-4-2), which will face second-seeded Fabius-Pompey on Friday at a time to be determined.

Herkimer finishes at 6-9-2.

UTICA-NOTRE DAME 5, SACKETS HARBOR 2

Dara Chhit and Matthew Waszkiewicz scored two goals apiece to lead the Jugglers (5-11-1) past the Patriots in a Class D-1 first-round game in Utica.

Eric Chrostowski provided a pair of goals for Sackets Harbor (5-9-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

WATERTOWN 1, HOMER 1 (SO)

The No. 6 Cyclones won a penalty-kick shootout, 4-2, to advance to the Section 3 Class A quarterfinals after registering a tie with the No. 11 Trojans in a first-round game at Watertown High School.

Watertown is scheduled to play at No. 3 Camden at 5 p.m. Friday.

Brianne Arthur, Kira Kolb, Miranda Gilbert and Morgan Exford each scored shootout goals.

During regulation, Arthur scored on an assist from Morgan Cadwell in the fourth minute.

Kim Dieroff tied the game in the second half for Homer. Emma Porter and Alexis Settineri scored goals during the shootout, and Nadine Downing finished with 11 saves for Homer (7-7-3).

Goalie Katie Aldrich stopped 12 shots for Watertown (9-4-4).

EAST SYRACUSE-MINOA 7, CARTHAGE 0

Kaitlyn Shaughnessy struck for three goals to lead the Spartans (10-6-1) past the Comets in a Class A first-round game in East Syracuse.

Haley Ryan made 11 saves for Carthage, which ended its season at 7-7-2.

SOUTH LEWIS 2, HERKIMER 1 (OT)

Ashley York scored the deciding goal in the 88th minute as the No. 8 Falcons edged the No. 9 Magicians in a Class C-1 first-round game in Turin.

York one-timed a corner kick from Jenna Rogers for South Lewis (8-8-1), which advances to play at top-seeded Sauquoit Valley (13-2-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Ronni Ehlers scored on a breakaway in the first half, and Miranda Rys finished with 14 saves for South Lewis.

Caitlin Roorda scored the tying goal in the 77th minute for Herkimer (6-8-3).

SACKETS HARBOR 5, TYBURN 0

Caitlyn Graves scored twice in the first 10 minutes and the eighth-seeded Patriots cruised to a Class D first-round victory over No. 9 Tyburn Academy (6-9-1) at Sackets Harbor.

Rainy Johannessen also scored twice for Sackets Harbor (10-7), which will play at top-seeded Poland (15-1) in the quarterfinals Thursday or Friday at a time to be determined.

FAITH HERITAGE 3, LYME 1

Bailey Shattell scored three goals to lead No. 10 Faith Heritage (6-9-2) to an upset win over the No. 7 Indians in a Class D first-round game at Chaumont.

Lauren Barry scored off an assist from Yanna Ososkalo for Lyme (8-6-2).
