THERESA — A Redwood woman is dead and her companion hospitalized in Syracuse following a head-on crash Thursday night allegedly caused by a motorist’s unsafe passing on Route 37 in the town of Theresa, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

Robin T. Broughton, 53, of 43812 Stine Road, was pronounced dead at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Michael W. Homan, 61, same address, who was driving, was flown by LifeNet helicopter to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. He was listed in critical condition Friday morning.

The second motorist, Mark C. Hujar, 46, Hammond, was not injured, a sheriff’s sergeant said. He was charged with unsafe passing and failure to keep right, but as the investigation continues, additional charges are possible, deputies said.

Deputies said Mr. Hujar was driving a 2004 Ford pickup north on Route 37 shortly before 7:15 p.m., when he entered the southbound lane to pass an uninvolved vehicle. In doing so, his truck collided with Mr. Homan’s 2011 Hyundai Accent, deputies said.

Ambulances from Indian River, Redwood, Evans Mills and Guilfoyle responded, as did Redwood, Plessis and Theresa firefighters.
