Hammond replaces Chippewa Bay dock

HAMMOND — Highway Department crews finished repairing damage to the Chippewa Bay dock Monday.

The damage was caused by several concrete barges colliding with the wooden dock, which stands alongside the boat ramp, town Highway Superintendent Donald H. Greene said Monday.

“The side we had to replace gets the worst beating from the boats,” Mr. Greene said. “We’ve got a couple of barges out there. When they run against the dock, they do a lot of damage.”

The result was a hole that with low water levels proved dangerous for boaters, who could get stuck, he said.

The crew spent Friday disassembling the old dock. On Monday, Highway Department crews replaced more than 160 of the wooden stave pieces.

“The water is low right now. This is the time to do it,” Mr. Greene said.

On Nov. 2, crews from Jefferson Concrete, Watertown, will replace a ramp near the dock, which was damaged as a result of normal wear and tear, Supervisor Ronald W. Bertram said.

The project cost $2,200, Mr. Greene said.

Mr. Bertram said if the dock becomes damaged again, the council will have to decide on a “more permanent solution.”

The Town Council is developing language for an ordinance that would limit overnight parking in the docking area.

“We’re working on pursuing that this winter,” Mr. Bertram said.
