CANTON Two footbridges spanning the Grasse River connecting SUNY Canton to downtown have reopened after being refurbished with timber-framed covered walkways.
The bridges closed June 4 for the upgrade, which improved the appearance of the deteriorating bridges, built in the 1960s. The structures provide access to the campus for students and staff members living in the village.
Final construction, by Murnane Building Contractors Inc. of Plattsburgh, is ongoing but will not impede student access to the bridges.
Though the bridges reopened to traffic Friday, the university is planning an official grand opening for the new structures in October.
