LOWVILLE — In a failed attempt to pass an Amish buggy, a man driving a pickup truck south on Route 12 between Yancey and Nefsey roads struck a northbound vehicle at 12:28 p.m. Monday after losing control and crossing the center line.

Douglas Patterson, 20, of Greig, was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup south when he allegedly failed to see the Amish horse and buggy traveling in the same direction, even though it was equipped with a slow-moving-vehicle triangle. When he finally saw the rig, he swerved into the northbound lane to pass but saw oncoming traffic and slammed on the brakes. Spinning out of control, the rear of the vehicle slid around and crossed the center line backward into the northbound lane.

The rear of Mr. Patterson’s vehicle collided with the front of a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck driven by Andrew Roggie, 70, Lowville. Mr. Roggie’s vehicle sustained severe front-end damage and the crash activated his front air bag.

Both men reported minor injuries at the scene but declined medical treatment. The horse and buggy completely avoided the accident.

After conducting an investigation at the scene shortly after the incident, members of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department charged Mr. Patterson with failure to use due care, imprudent speed when approaching a horse and failure to keep right. He was given an appearance ticket for Lowville Town Court.

Assisting at the scene were the Lowville Fire Department and Lewis County Search and Rescue.
