A display saluting Medal of Honor recipients with north country ties has opened at the Jefferson County Historical Society and the St. Lawrence County Historical Association's Silas Wright Museum, Canton.

The traveling exhibit also has stops scheduled Sept. 1 and 2 at The Power and Equipment Museum at Madrid's Old Fashioned Harvest Days Weekend, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 at the Halfshire Historical Society Museum, Richland, and on Oct. 27 at the Annual Fun at the Walker House Museum, Madrid.

An “opening reception” for the exhibit is set for 3 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson County Historical Society museum.

Among about 45 heroes who were either natives or residents of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties being recognized in the tribute are:

■ Sgt. First Class Jared C. Monti, 10th Mountain Division, killed in Afghanistan.

■ Sgt. Frederick R. Jackson, Civil War soldier who settled in Smithville.

■ Gen. Newton M. Curtis, Civil War hero who was the pride of Depeyster and Ogdensburg.

■ Sgt. George H. Eldridge, Sackets Harbor native who led a successful charge, despite being outnumbered, against the Kiowa tribe at Little Wichita River, Texas.

■ Pvt. Joseph Lonsway, Sackets Harbor native who was a Union hero in combat in Virginia.

■ Pvt. Alaric B. Chapin, Ogdensburg native and eventual Pamelia resident, who was a Civil War hero at Fort Fisher, N.C.

■ Capt. Dayton P. Clarke, DeKalb native who displayed heroism in Civil War combat in Virginia.

■ Pvt. James Flanagan of Louisville, a standout in Civil War combat in Tennessee.

■ First Lt. John T. Rutherford, Waddington native and eventual Canton resident who was a Civil War hero in Virginia.

■ “Willie “ Johnston of Morristown, who was dubbed “President Lincoln's Drummer.” n Brothers James and Allen Thompson of Sandy Creek, who were killed during the Appomattox campaign.
