Lisbon tradition continues at homecoming

LISBON - Spectators lined the streets on a cool sunny Saturday for the annual Lisbon homecoming parade.

The day’s events began with a 5K fun run/walk at the American Legion and a breakfast buffet at the United Presbyterian Church.

“I did the walk/run this morning for the first time ever. I did not come in first, but I did not come in last so I’m pretty happy with myself,” said Barb A. McBath.

The festivities stretched throughout the town, with yard sales at many houses and rides on a miniature train for children at the Lisbon Depot Museum.

Mary J. Denny, Heuvelton, came to town with her parade-loving 4-year-old granddaughter Mary J. Denny, Syracuse.

“I just took her up here to see the parade, she doesn’t get to see a lot of them,” Mrs. Denny said.

Sirens signalled the start of the parade just after 11 a.m. Children waited eagerly alongside the parade route for the candy they knew was sure to be tossed by marchers.

The crowd applauded for Lisbon Central School’s marching band, which recently received word that it would be representing the area in the national Independence Day celebration in Washington D.C. next summer.

Stephen M. Planty and Heather C. Harper sat watching the parade in a bright purple dune buggy.

“I just like to get out of the house,” Mr. Planty said.

“Usually we bring the kids, but we came without them this year because they’re on vacation,” Ms. Harper said.

At noon a chicken barbecue began at the fire station, while a sand-castle competition began on the beach.

After an ice-cream social at the First Congregational Church, the day ended with games and activities on the beach, with fireworks to close out the night.

Homecoming continues today with a youth triathlon at 1 p.m. Registration is from noon to 12:45 p.m.

Refreshments will be served from 11:30 to 4 p.m. today at the town beach and campground.
