Algae bloom reported on Black Lake

MACOMB — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is advising people not to swim, fish, jet ski or tube on Black Lake as a result of an algae bloom.

The bloom was first noticed on portions of the lake on July 21, including southeast of Tavern Island and along the south and east shorelines of Conger Island.

Algae blooms occur in nutrient rich waters and this summer’s hot weather has created prime conditions for the outbreak.

The DEC recommends avoiding contact with floating “rafts” of algae, scum and discolored water because certain types of algae can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. Symptoms of contact with harmful blue-green algae blooms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin or throat irritation, allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.
