Euto, Thayer run to top finishes at Tri-Town Summer Festival

BRASHER FALLS - It was a warm morning when over 70 runners and walkers started off on a 3.2 mile run and walk from Saturday for the Tri-Town Summer Festival 5K Run/Walk Race.

It is a family oriented run with several families running together in the event.

Jeb Euto, 23, of Brasher Center crossed the finish line first with a time of 22:23. High school rising junior Lindsay Thayer was the top female finisher.

Mr. Euto said he benefited from a course running error by the early leader at the mid-race point. “The guy in front of me got lost and took a wrong turn by the school,” he noted.

He said the early morning August heat provided a challenge to the 3.2 mile course from the Tri-Town Community Center to the St. Lawrence Central school campus and then back to the arena. “There wasn’t much air out there this morning,” he said.

The SUNY Canton student said the final stage of the race tests the runners. “The toughest part is that last half mile, three quarters of a mile is all an incline. That really tests the endurance, the legs,” he said.

Madee Derouchie, sprinting to the finish line, took top honors in the race for competitors under 15 years of age. She finished the course in 23:45.

For many in the race, it was an opportunity to spend some quality time on the sidewalks and pavements of Brasher Falls. Sharon Burl held the camera and the keys as six members of her family competed in the event - sons Chris and Michael, daughter Heather Taylor, daughter in law Lana Burl and grandchildren Makenzie and Grant Taylor. Chris and Lana Burl came home from Morristown, Tenn. for the induction of Chris’ 1992 high school lacrosse team into the St. Lawrence Central Hall of Fame.

“This is a nice show for what they learned at school, Kudos to the school’s athletic program,” she said.

Willie Miller, who ran in the 60 and over category, had a partner for his run. His six-year-old grandson, Breydon Cootware, clad in his Crocs rather than sneakers, made a last minute decision to run with his grandfather rather than walk with his grandmother.

“He came down to run with his grandmother and then decided he was going to run with me. It’s the first time he has ever run a race. It surprised me when he said he was going to run. I think he is hooked now,” Mr. Miller said.

“Then he went inside with his frog (for the frog jumping contest), and it had a good hop. It’s been a good day for him so far,” Mr. Miller said well before 10 a.m. Saturday.
