ADAMS — Plans are in the works to restore the Sixtown Meeting House, one of the area’s oldest buildings.

The project has been taken on by the Historical Association of South Jefferson, which has used state grant money to restore the building’s roof and the siding on the back portion of the building.

The association now is raising funds to help complete the work, and already has taken in about $10,000.

“We’ve had very good response to the project so far,” said Deborah A. Quick, secretary of the association’s board of directors.

With the back end of the building mostly re-sided, the association would use raised funds to do similar work on the rest of the building. The association also plans to repair the building’s stained-glass windows.

Mrs. Quick said an overall goal for the fundraising has not been set, as the group is still waiting on final estimates on the cost of the work.

According to the association, the meeting house was completed in 1827 as the Adams Presbyterian Church. In 1850, the building had its first major renovation done, including the installation of a large pipe organ. The building’s stained-glass windows were added.

The building was purchased by the local Masonic Lodge in 1950 after the church’s closure, and it was sold to the historical association in 1984.

The building has been used by multiple groups for area fundraisers and community events, as well as public meetings and wedding receptions.

“It wasn’t just important for the village, but the whole area,” Mrs. Quick said.
