City police intervened in separate disturbances Thursday involving the same Carthage man and staffers for Matthew A. Doheny’s congressional campaign.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Juston J. LaJoie requested to speak with Mr. Doheny at his 132 Court St. office. Mr. Doheny was not in the office at the time. Mr. LaJoie allegedly became combative with Mr. Doheny’s staff, who called police.

He left after police intervened. A Watertown Daily Times reporter who arrived on the scene witnessed Mr. LaJoie directing profanities at a Doheny staffer. No charges were filed in that incident.

Later that day, Mr. LaJoie returned to Mr. Doheny’s campaign office, “verbally abused” a staffer there and then drove to Mr. Doheny’s residence on Paddock Street, according to a statement from Mr. Doheny’s campaign. Mr. LaJoie denied involvement in the Paddock Street incident.

The Doheny campaign staffer called police after he saw what he believed was Mr. LaJoie’s car outside. Police and a K9 unit were seen outside Mr. Doheny’s Paddock Street home sometime after 10 p.m., according to several witnesses. Mr. Doheny was in Saratoga County at the time.

“In both instances, incident reports were filed and charges were not pressed against the individual in question,” said Jude R. Seymour, the campaign spokesman, in an email message. “No one was hurt. We appreciate the prompt response from the Watertown Police Department and the professionalism they have shown in handling this unfortunate situation.”

The police officer who responded to the Paddock Street incident declined to comment, directing a reporter to a department spokesman, who could not be reached Friday.

In an interview with the Times, Mr. LaJoie said the campaign office incident Thursday afternoon involved personal animus between a member of Mr. Doheny’s staff and himself.
