ELMIRA — North Country players didn’t fare very well in the opening round of the 90th New York State Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Elmira Country Club.

Ryan Williams of Potsdam and Zachary Meade from Tupper Lake were the top local shooters, each recording a 7-over-par 79 in the opening round. That was good for a tie for 70th place.

However, it was 13 shots behind the leader, Jaime Sindelar, of Soaring Eagles GC in Elmira.

Massena’s Anthony Viskovich fired an 81 and is in a tie for 95th place.
