LOUISVILLE — Students participating in the town’s summer recreation program this year will be taken to the town beach every day, rather than just on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“In the past, kids have always asked about going to the beach more, so we’re going to give this a try and see how it works out,” said Recreation Director Judy A. Porter.

Students, who are picked up at their homes, initially are taken to the Louisville Arena each morning, where activities are held from 10 a.m. to noon. Students are then bused to Jefferson Elementary in Massena for lunch before being taken to the town beach until 3 p.m.

“They come out of the water at 3 p.m.,” Mrs. Porter said. “It then takes a little while for them to get ready, but when they’re ready then we come back.”

Each Wednesday students are taken on field trips, ranging from mini-golf to the movies, bowling or skating.

The program runs Monday through Thursday until Aug. 9 and is open to students who are entering kindergarten and older. Everything including lunch is free, unless there is a field trip that day.

“The only charge we have is if we go on a field trip, but it’s usually very minimal,” Assistant Director Sandy M. Robinson said, using mini-golf at a cost of $2.50 as an example.

Mrs. Porter said most days there are between 20 and 30 kids, but they are hoping to see the numbers grow, at least a little bit.

“We do have a smaller group, so we can do more one-on-one activities,” Mrs. Robinson said, adding they frequently do arts and crafts projects.

“The girls love beads and scrapbooking,” she said.

While students should be prepared to go to the beach each day, in the event of inclement weather, Mrs. Porter said they will stay at the arena, where indoor activities will be held.
