CANTON — An inmate attempting to smuggle tobacco and suboxone, a painkiller, into the St. Lawrence County jail was arrested by sheriff’s deputies Sunday.

Joseph M. Hutchinson, 28, was charged with promoting prison contraband and criminal possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors.

Mr. Hutchinson, who was indicted in March 2010 for reportedly selling heroin a year earlier, was found possessing tobacco and suboxone while being processed at the jail, deputies said.

He is to answer the charges in Village Court.
