POTSDAM — The Orchestra of Northern New York plans a big bash a day before the Fourth of July.

“It’s a lot of big band music, solo trombone and Americana,” Kenneth B. Andrews, the orchestra’s musical director, said of the “Orchestra of Northern New York and the Big Band Era” program scheduled for Tuesday night at Hosmer Hall at SUNY Potsdam.

“Plus, we have a great soloist,” Mr. Andrews said.

The soloist, Bret Zvacek, is professor of music and director of jazz studies at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. An active trombone soloist/clinician for Yamaha, Mr. Zvacek has performed with numerous jazz artists and has been a guest conductor all over the U.S., Canada and Europe.

He will present his world premiere arrangement written exclusively for the orchestra, “Deep Fascinating Things,” at Tuesday’s concert. It includes arrangements of “All the Things You Are” by Jerome Kern, “How Deep is the Ocean” by Irving Berlin and “Fascinatin’ Rhythm” by George Gershwin.

“He’s also soloing in a jazz version of ‘Over the Rainbow,’” Mr. Andrews said.

Patriotic tunes will include the “Armed Forces Salute,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “The Star Spangled Banner” and Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”

Tunes from the concert’s “Big Band” aspect will include the works of Henry Mancini and Duke Ellington.

There also will be a “Salute to the Big Bands” piece arranged by Calvin Custer, the longtime Syracuse Symphony Orchestra conductor and arranger who died in 1998. The selections in that piece include “April in Paris,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” and “Serenade in Blue.”

The winner of the orchestra’s 2012 guest maestro raffle, Patricia K. Gengo of Winthrop, will conduct “Colonel Bogey March” written by British army bandmaster Lt. F.J. Ricketts. The song is associated with the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai.”
