CANTON — A Gouverneur man was sentenced Wednesday in St. Lawrence County Court on larceny charges to one year in jail and five years’ probation, and was ordered to pay $17,358.14 restitution.

Ryan M. Redmond, 33, of 5366 Route 58, pleaded guilty April 6 to second-degree criminal contempt and fourth-degree grand larceny.

Mr. Redmond’s criminal contempt charge stemmed from a November 2010 incident in which he broke into the Gouverneur home of Jamie McIntosh, with whom he shares a child. While viewing private Family Court documents, Mr. Redmond sent text messages to Ms. McIntosh, evidence the grand jury deemed sufficient proof that he intended to steal those documents.

Mr. Redmond also was accused of using the ATM card of Lorraine Wagstaff — who gave Mr. Redmond’s mother permission to use the card while ill and unable to leave the house in 2010 — to withdraw more than $6,000 between April and November 2010.

He was caught making transactions with the card by a Gouverneur bank’s security camera, according to court documents.

Identity theft and grand larceny charges against Mary J. Redmond, Mr. Redmond’s mother, were dismissed in November. County Judge Jerome J. Richards ruled that although Ms. Redmond knew of her son’s criminal activity, that knowledge alone was insufficient proof that she acted in concert or committed a crime.
