Lillian Meshurel

Lillian Meshurel, 92, passed away June 16, 2012 while residing at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton, NY where she had resided since December 2011. Lillian was born in Fort Jackson, NY in 1920 the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Baker) Ober. She graduated from Potsdam Normal School in 1942, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She also received a Masters degree in Education from Potsdam State.

Lillian began her teaching career in a one room school house outside of Russell, NY and retired from the Massena School District after teaching early elementary grades for her entire career. She was married on August 18, 1946 to Russell Meshurel, who predeceased her on May 22, 2004 while they were living in Florida.

Throughout her adult life Lillian volunteered in many organizations, including United Methodist Women, Literacy Volunteers and PTA. She was very active in the Methodist Church in both Massena and Florida, serving on several local and statewide committees, as well as teaching Bible classes. Lillian enjoyed working in her gardens, reading, sewing and knitting, and most of all, spending time with her family.

Lillian was survived by her sons, Ronald G. Meshurel and wife Janice M. (Agresta) Meshurel and Dean R. Meshurel and wife Deborah L. (Annis) Meshurel. She had four grandchildren, Gretchen (Meshurel) Vaughn, Megan (Meshurel) Silas, Gregory Meshurel and Heidi Meshurel-Jolly. Lillian also had 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Helen Ober (Canton) and Jean Maccarone (Oneida, NY) and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, George Ober and Harold Ober, as well as one sister, Arlene Carley.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Massena First United Methodist Church on June 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Lawrence Co. Hospice & Palliative Care.

Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam.
