St. Lawrence releases 2012-13 season schedule

CANTON — St. Lawrence University has released the 2012-13 season schedule for the men’s hockey team, which will play some of the top teams in the country from the start.

Among their 34-game slate, the Saints will face five teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season — ECAC foes Union, which reached last year’s Frozen Four, and Cornell, as well as Western Michigan, Maine and Boston University.

St. Lawrence opens its season — with the head coaching debut of Greg Carvel, who takes over the reigns from long-time coach Joe Marsh — by playing at Western Michigan on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 and traveling to face Maine the next weekend (Oct. 19-20).

After opening their home schedule by hosting Alabama-Huntsville (Nov. 2-3) at Appleton Arena, the Saints begin their ECAC schedule at Brown and at Yale (Nov. 9-10), respectively, and host Brown and Quinnipiac the next weekend.

St. Lawrence will also again play arch-rival Clarkson University three times in the regular season, hosting the Golden Knights in an ECAC game on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. and the two foes clash in a non-conference game in Lake Placid on Dec. 8 in the Festivus Faceoff at Herb Brooks Arena at 7. The two teams meet for the final time in the regular season at Clarkson on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

The Saints play reigning ECAC champion Union twice within the last month of the regular season, hosting RPI and the Dutchmen (Feb. 8-9), respectively, and wrapping up their league campaign at Union and at RPI (March 1-2).

The Saints’ non-conference schedule also includes games at Northeastern and Boston University (Nov. 23-24) and home games against Vermont (Dec. 15) and RIT (Jan. 4-5).
