MASSENA - Trinity Catholic School officials will be using chicken to help buy new ovens.
Theyre holding a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday to help cover the cost of new ovens that are needed in the schools cafeteria.
We need new ovens in our cafeteria. You put a cake in and it comes out as runny as when you put it in, Principal Joan M. Rufa said.
The ovens have served their purposes well over the years, she said.
Theyre at least 30 years old, if not older. Theyve been here at least as long as Trinitys been here, probably when it was Sacred Heart, Mrs. Rufa said.
Now its time to replace them with more modern appliances that will serve the schools kitchen staff well into the future. And they hope to raise enough money during Saturdays chicken barbecue to begin putting money toward the new ovens.
Weve started looking. Theyre going to be pretty costly. This is kind of the first step. We hope to get maybe halfway to the price and figure out what were going to do from there, the principal said.
The menu includes one-half barbecued chicken, salt potatoes, pasta salad, lemonade and ice tea, and two chocolate chip cookies, all for $9 a person.
The fundraiser begins at 11:30 p.m. and will last as long as theres chicken available, Mrs. Rufa said.
I would say were going to go to at least 3 oclock in the afternoon, she said.
Visitors can dine outside if the weather is nice, in the cafeteria, or they can order a take-out meal.
I think its going to be a lot of fun. If the weather is not cooperative, the cafeteria will be open so people can stay inside. They dont have to stay outside. We are going to have take-out so people can come and just take out their meal, Mrs. Rufa said.
