CANTON The St. Lawrence County Department of Emergency Services is designing challenge coins to recognize acts of bravery, heroism or going above and beyond the call of duty. The contest is for the design of three challenge coins one for firefighters, one for medical personnel and one for civilians.
Anyone may nominate anyone for a challenge coin, but the act must be verified by witnesses at the scene, according to EMS Director Joseph Gilbert.
A challenge coin is a military tradition for leaders to immediately recognize their outstanding people. It is a 2- to 3-inch-diameter, thick, brass coin. The coins front will have the St. Lawrence County Emergency Services emblem on it, and there will be three designs for the reverse fire, EMS and a third for anyone not covered in the first two categories. The contest runs through June 15 with a prize of $100 each for the three chosen designers.
The designs must be submitted in a digital format to Mr. Gilbert through email at jgilbert@stlawco.org.
