Republican Matthew A. Doheny rang in the new year with a ring.

Mr. Doheny, who will run for Congress this year, proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Mary E. Reidy, in the first few seconds of 2012, the campaign said in a posting on Facebook.

Ms. Reidy is a lawyer in New York City, and is originally from Worcester, Mass. The two plan to wed this summer.

Mr. Doheny is vying for the north country’s congressional seat, held by Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh.
