Coast Guard rescues men swept into Lake Ontario

OSWEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two men from Lake Ontario after waves washed them off the breakwall about 4:10 p.m. Saturday.

Coast Guard Station Oswego was on patrol with a 47-foot motor lifeboat when crew members spotted the men near the breakwall. Neither man was wearing a life jacket. Both were in good condition and refused medical attention.

"The waves were about 6 feet," Petty Officer Byron Wiswell said. "They were lucky we happened to be so close."

The Coast Guard said when near the water, it's best to always wear a life jacket.
