Immaculate Heart Central School class leaders

The 2009 class leaders of Immaculate Heart Central School are Anne Marie LaFave, valedictorian, and Jiyeong Kim, salutatorian. Both are members of National Honor Society, Whiz Quiz, and peer tutoring, and both have received Faith Community Service awards for their work with Respect Life Club activities

Miss LaFave is the daughter of Glenn and Elizabeth LaFave of Brownville and had a grade-point average of 97.11. She was president of the student council as well as a member of the foreign language club and the Mystery Players. Her volunteer work included helping at the Urban Mission, the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity and area nursing homes.

Miss LaFave received the Sisters of St. Joseph departmental awards in religion and English, the Diocesan Outstanding Student Award, the Channel 7 News Academic All-Star Award, the New York State Regents Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the New York State Lottery Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship, the United States Air Force Recruiting Service Scholar Athlete Award, the Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award, the United States Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award and the Faith Community Service Award.

Miss LaFave plans to attend Nazareth College in Rochester.

Miss Kim, daughter of Kwang Soo and Jin-A Hwang Kim of South Korea, is hosted by John and Elizabeth Montondo of Watertown and has a grade-point average of 96.47. The treasurer of student council, she has participated in yearbook, forensics, mock trial, the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Foreign Language Club, variety shows, musicals, and plays. Miss Kim has been a top scorer in the New York State Math League and volunteered through Habitat for Humanity, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Jefferson County Youth Court.

Miss Kim has received the Sisters of St. Joseph departmental award in math, the American Legion School Award, and the United States Air Force Math and Science Award. She plans to attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
