President Barack Obama has said that he wants Congress to reconsider immigration policy, which he termed one of America's "most pressing issues."
The other day, he met with leaders from both parties. USA Today notes that he sat next to Arizona Sen. John McCain, his opponent in the presidential race who also advocates immigration reform.
The president did not mince words, saying he was "fully committed" to overhauling immigration laws.
"After all the demagoguery on all sides around the issue, we've got a responsible set of leaders sitting around this table who want to actively get something done," Mr. Obama said.
Congress and the president have a few other items on their plates. As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., outlined, lawmakers must first address President Obama's desire for health care reform and passage of legislation curbing greenhouse gas emissions. The economy needs watching, too.
After handing those agenda items, lawmakers can then tackle immigration reform — if they possess the strength.
