Brian McIntosh played for former Canton boys lacrosse Dave Bradman 20 years ago. Now, he's taking over the program Bradman guided for 23 years.

"I've coached alongside him for 12 or 13 years," McIntosh said. "He just does things so much differently than any coaches I've seen."

McIntosh coached junior varsity for the last several years and said working under and with Bradman molded his coaching style, which he hopes will succeed at the varsity level.

"I honestly believe Canton lacrosse is the most respected lacrosse program north of Carthage," McIntosh said. "I intend to keep it there."

Bradman won't be far away, though. He's staying on as a volunteer assistant coach. McIntosh welcomes the help.

"I wished that last year I would have turned over the JV reigns and coached alongside Dave at the varsity," he said. "It wasn't the way it worked out. He's right there for me, and he's helped me make the adjustment to the next level."

The Golden Bears fell to Salmon River, 16-12, last year in the Section 10 Class C championship. Canton graduated nine seniors from that team, including Bradman's son Sam, who led Section 10 with 111 goals and 67 assists last year.

"Right now, we're real young, and our JV numbers are down," McIntosh said. "We're in a little slump right now, but I expect to get it back on top."

McIntosh knows his players from developing them as underclassmen. Senior midfielder Colin Howard said having a familiar face still at varsity helps ease the transition.

"We know what to expect," he said. "We knew we weren't going to have the same coach that we've always had — winning Section 10 titles and going far in the states. We've had our coach now since JV, and we hope he can do the same things Mr. Bradman can do."

McIntosh said he's more hard-nosed in practice than Bradman was, but is confident he can get the same results.

"The main difference is: I'll tend to be more the bad coach, and he would be the good coach," he said. "I don't let them slack off, and I make sure they're working."

Canton caught a break from Class C rival Salmon River this offseason. The Shamrocks' star players Lyle, Miles and Ty Thompson transferred out of the section. Howard said he wasn't worried about Salmon River yet.

"We're just looking to be competitive in the league and hoping to keep up the legacy we usually have," he said. "We've been doing pretty good (in practice) this early on. We know what we're comfortable with. We know how to work it."

McIntosh expects Brendan Bolis, Jon O'Connor and Howard to lead the offense. The defense is less sound.

"We're trying to do some different things there. It's a little down," McIntosh said. "We do have a solid goaltender with Erik Howard. I think we'll be all right. I think in Section 10, we'll be fine and we'll be a contender."

BOYS LACROSSE

Outlook:The talent in Section 10 is even throughout. Canton has dominated the section most years, but winning games this year might prove difficult with only five seniors and a handful more with limited varsity experience. Someone will have to emerge as a go-to scorer. The same is true for Section 10 Class C champion Salmon River. The Shamrocks not only graduated nine players, but lost returners Lyle, Miles and Ty Thompson when they transferred. Saranac Lake looks the strongest on paper with 15 seniors. The Red Storm will be strong. Massena is young, but talented with Dan Tyo in net and David Henrie, Randal Seymour and Taylor Elsner on offense. Potsdam will likely be competitive throughout. Colton-Pierrepont is in its second full season after starting the program last year. Ogdensburg Free Academy is just starting a program, but its players have been on junior varsity and modified teams. The Blue Devils were just waiting for the right mix to start the varsity. That time is now.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Outlook:It would be easy to pick Canton as the runaway favorite for Section 10, especially when considering the Golden Bears are the only team that finished above .500 overall and undefeated in the league. Heuvelton and OFA could cause problems, but Canton has depth. Aside from Massena, the Golden Bears have the largest roster in the league. Their numbers alone will give them an added advantage late in games. Heuvelton plays a difficult nonleague schedule, going 0-6 in it last season, but finished second behind Canton in the league. The Bulldogs are very young, overall, despite the seven seniors. Heuvelton has 15 who are underclassmen.
