CANTON — A Malone man was sentenced Tuesday in St. Lawrence County Court to six to 12 years in state prison for selling stolen computers and tools.

Gerald J. Murphy Jr., 42, pleaded guilty in September to third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. He will serve consecutive prison terms of three to six years for each conviction.

He was accused of being in possession of more than $3,000 worth of tools belonging to the town of Dannemora Highway Department, three Dell laptop computers belonging to the state Department of Transportation and a computer belonging to David P. Smith in September 2007.

Originally from New York City, Mr. Murphy was arrested by state police while trying to sell the allegedly stolen goods at a Gouverneur business. They included chain saws, a compressor, power tools, an air impact gun and a battery charger taken from the highway department several hours earlier.

Mr. Murphy was sentenced as a repeat felony offender because of a 1998 burglary conviction in Jefferson County. County Judge Jerome J. Richards ordered him to pay $640 in court fees.
