The Salvation Army's largest fundraiser needs two people to become volunteer bell-ringing coordinators for the Philadelphia and Alexandria Bay areas.

Mary T. Stronach, spokeswoman for the Empire State Division of the Salvation Army, said coordinators help find bell-ringers and make sure the little red kettles are in appropriate places.

"If someone wants to give back to the community, but has a limited timeline, this would be perfect," Mrs. Stronach said.

Bell-ringing coordinators, she said, should be people who know and care about people in their community.

The time commitment would be from late October through December. Coordinators generally find bell ringers through church, school or other community organizations, Mrs. Stronach said.

She also said the Red Kettle Campaign, which kicks off next month, could use more volunteer bell ringers in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

Anyone interested can call the Red Kettle Center at 1 (877) 764-7259.

About 90 percent of the Red Kettle Campaign's money goes back to the communities in which it was raised. A service unit committee will decide how the money will be spent in its community. Jefferson County service unit areas include Adams, Alexandria Bay, Cape Vincent, Carthage, Clayton and Philadelphia. There also is a corps at 723 State St., Watertown.

Funds often are used to send children to camps, provide scholarships, buy food baskets, prescriptions and clothing and stock food pantries.
