Potsdam's Stone ties for 11th in state boys golf

ONEONTA — Potsdam's Ben Stone produced the highest finish of any North Country golfer as the New York State Golf Association's Junior and Boys Tournaments concluded Wednesday at Oneonta Country Club.

Stone, out of Potsdam Town and Country Club, finished in a tie for 11th place in the boys event with a two-day score of 12-over-par 156. He shot an 82 on Wednesday after an opening round of 74.

Michael Chambers of Potsdam finished in a tie for 20th at 166 (85-81) and Cody Compeau of Potsdam was in 25th place at 174 (88-86). Gavin Hall of Pittsford won the title with a record 6-under-par 138 (66-72).

In the junior division, Massena's Matt Viskovich topped the local contingent with a 23rd place finish. Viskovich shot a 74 Wednesday and finished at 11-over 155. Massena's Justin Tyo, who shot 76 Tuesday, added an 82 Wednesday to finish at 14-over 158, which was a tie for 34th place. Watertown's Drew Laemmermann was tied for 43rd at 160 (79-81) and Shawn Thomas of The Thousand Islands Golf Club tied for 58th at 166 (85-81).

Yaroslav Merkulov of Penfield won the title at 2-under-par 142.
