GOUVERNEUR — The Gouverneur Fire Department is the recipient of a $45,292 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the federal Department of Homeland Security.
The money will pay for hydraulic lines and stabilization equipment to assist with vehicles that are overturned or on their sides. It also will pay for personal safety equipment and accessories for the department's hydraulic jaws.
"It'll help us extricate people faster," said Assistant Fire Chief W. Joseph Lacks.
The application for the grant was written by Mr. Lacks and Jeffrey A. Gibson, a member of the Richville Fire Department.
"It'll be Gouverneur's equipment, but it'll benefit Richville and Harrisville and Edwards," Mr. Lacks said. "Wherever we're called to mutual aid, we'll bring the equipment."
The city of Oswego also received a $10,320 grant, U.S. Rep. John M. McHugh, R-Pierrepont Manor, announced Wednesday.
