FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2008

MALONE — An Attica man accused of killing a husband and wife who were riding on their motorcycle in the Adirondacks pleaded innocent Tuesday in Franklin County Court.

Edward J. Schmieder, 45, was charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree man-slaughter and one count each of reckless driving and failure to keep right. County Judge Robert G. Main Jr. sent him to Franklin County jail on $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.

Steven R. Markham, 51, and Sandra J. Markham, 49, Locke, were riding July 1, 2007, with seven other motorcyclists on Route 30 in Tupper Lake when a truck driven by Schmieder crossed into their lane, state troopers said at the time.
