CANTON — An Ogdensburg man who admitted shaking and injuring an infant won't be allowed near him.
William J. LaRock Jr., 19, of 610 Gates St., was sentenced Wednesday in St. Lawrence County Court to serve 120 days in the St. Lawrence County jail and was placed on five years' probation. He pleaded guilty in May to felony reckless assault on a child.
He admitted shaking 9-month-old Trenton M. Cushing after the infant woke up suddenly and began crying March 26. The child was treated at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, for bleeding on the brain and later was released. Trenton celebrated his first birthday June 11.
County Judge Jerome J. Richards said Mr. LaRock "failed in that responsibility" to care for a young child, but was willing to give him a second chance. Mr. LaRock said he's getting help for his problems.
The judge allowed him to continue making his appointments during the week, while serving his jail sentence on the weekends starting Friday. Mr. LaRock will be jailed from 9 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Monday each week until he completes the term.
A condition of his probation prohibits him from being alone around children 17 or younger. He's expecting a child with Nancy L. Cushing, Trenton's mother.
The judge also ordered him to pay $7,692.49 in restitution and $370 in court fees and surcharges, along with signing a protection order forbidding him to be near Trenton. Ms. Cushing couldn't be reached for comment.
