CANTON — A 61-year-old man will spend seven years in state prison for having repeated sexual contact with an underage girl.
James M. Hannan, 7 Jones Road, was sentenced Thursday in St. Lawrence County Court. He pleaded guilty to felony first-degree sexual abuse, admitting he had sexual contact with a 9-year-old girl. He will have to register as a sex offender.
He was accused of touching her sexually and forcing her to paint his penis with lipstick and then wipe it off. He also was alleged to have forced the girl to perform sex acts involving candy and a vacuum cleaner and to have given her a pornographic magazine.
The victim's mother said Hannan should never be released from jail. Hannan apologized to the family for his actions before sentencing.
County Judge Jerome J. Richards called the incidents "horrendous and it's uncalled for," noting Hannan could have received more prison time if not for the plea agreement.
Hannan had been charged with eight felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The sentence will run concurrent with a federal prison term he received last month.
Hannan was sentenced June 13 in U.S. District Court to 17 years in federal prison for a conviction on a single count of production of child pornography. He taped the sexual acts with the victim in connection with the County Court case. The federal judge recommended he participate in the sex offender treatment program.
