Paul Smith's Bolton saws way to national title
TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Paul Smith's College student Matt Bolton captured the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Series championship Sunday and won a spot in the professional series next season.

Bolton took first place in all three disciplines Saturday to earn enough points to take the title in the national ESPN lumberjack competition. The Canandaigua resident won the stock saw (11.01 seconds), underhand chop (24.67 seconds) and single buck (17.5 seconds) events, topping five other collegiate lumberjacks. That put Bolton far enough ahead that he merely had to show up for Sunday's events to seal the victory.

On Sunday, Bolton lost to Colorado State's Adrian Flygt in the stock saw, beat Corey Christians of the University of Connecticut in the underhand chop and lost to Matt Slingerland of Montgomery Community College in the single buck.
