You can't have a committee meeting if you don't have a committee.

The trio of Jefferson County legislators who composed last year's technology ad hoc committee has been asking to schedule meetings since January. One problem: Legislature Chairman Kenneth D. Blankenbush, R-Black River, hasn't reconstituted the group. Mr. Blankenbush said his lack of action is intentional.

"I wanted to give (interim director) Greg (Hudson) enough time to fix any current problems and then try to come up with some changes and recommendations," he said. "There was no sense in a committee meeting until he had enough time on the job to do those three steps."

Mr. Hudson, the county's budget analyst, took over the department Nov. 2 when former director Darwin J. Harris Jr. took an indefinite administrative leave. Mr. Harris subsequently left county employment. Legislators opted against filling the position permanently during January appointments.

The committee will be re-formed at the June 6 meeting, Mr. Blankenbush said, and feature the same legislators: Scott A. Gray, R-Watertown, Philip N. Reed, R-Fishers Landing, and Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa.

Mr. Blankenbush wants the group to meet with Mr. Hudson by early July so the interim director can suggest how to overhaul the department. Mr. Blankenbush said he has not talked with Mr. Hudson about his recommendations, and Mr. Hudson previously has declined to talk specifics before presenting his findings to lawmakers.

Mr. Gray, the soon-to-be chairman of the committee, has said that the outstanding issues include the county's Web site, its computer security and the county's lack of offerings for consumers through the Internet. The group also must figure out who will succeed Mr. Hudson.

"I see that as a very important part," said Mr. Blankenbush, adding that Mr. Hudson is integral to the annual budget process. Last year, budget deliberations began Aug. 17.
