WASHINGTON — Airports in Watertown and Massena will see more than $300,000 in federal grants for runway improvements and other projects, Rep. John M. McHugh's office announced Tuesday.
The grants — $90,000 for Massena International and $220,000 for Watertown International — come from the Federal Aviation Administration's program for rural airports.
At Watertown, the grant will be used for an environmental assessment that will help shape the first five years of the county-owned facility's master plan. County leaders have been looking for ways to expand the airport, perhaps extending the runway to 7,000 feet to accommodate bigger planes.
In Massena, the grant will be used for a runway end survey, which will guide plans for a new approach to the runway. The project will allow for vertical guidance to the runway end, Mr. McHugh's office said.
The Massena grant, aimed at safety improvements, comes on the heels of federal funding for an environmental assessment there.
In a press release, Mr. McHugh said the grants would enhance safety and help plans for growth at north country airports.
"Supporting Watertown International Airport continues to be a top priority of mine, particularly as we look for ways to grow all local airports in our region," Mr. McHugh said. "This grant will help to ensure that Watertown International Airport can appropriately support the needs of residents."
