IHC's Nguyen wins crown, Alexandria captures team title
SECTION 3 TENNIS: Cavaliers player prevails in first singles in Class C-2 tournament; Purple Ghosts add to standout season

SYRACUSE — An Nguyen of Immaculate Heart Central defeated Hamilton's Gennady Julien by injury default to capture the Section 3 Class C-2 first singles championship in boys tennis Monday at Onondaga Community College.

Alexandria secured the team title over 11 other schools represented, behind victories from Shawn Martin at second singles and Ethan Thomson and Riley Thomson at first doubles.

"They were, top to bottom, the best team there," IHC coach Anthony Burgess said of Terry Satterley's Alexandria squad. "I was very impressed with how well they played."

Martin defeated Onondaga's Greg Mather, 6-4, 6-1, in the championship match, while the Thomsons outlasted Ty and Ben Banker of Morrisville-Eaton.

Alexandria's Travis Martin fell to Hamilton's Ryan Burdick, 6-1, 6-3, in the third singles final, while Wataru Yamazaki and Ethan Dunham of Alexandria were defeated by a pair from Morrisville-Eaton, 6-4, 6-4, in the second doubles championship.

In the first singles final, Nguyen lost the first set 6-4 and was leading the second set 5-2 when Julien suffered a cramp in his calf and decided to forfeit the match.

Nguyen and Ethan and Riley Thomson qualified for interclass sectional play Thursday at Utica Parkway.

BOYS LACROSSE

JAMESVILLE-DEWITT 11, CARTHAGE 10

Eric DeJohn scored on a Carthage turnover with 54 seconds remaining to lift the Red Rams to the nonleague victory at Syracuse.

The Comets failed to get a shot off in their final possession.

Cam Stone supplied two goals and three assists, Jake Bratek pitched in with a goal and four assists, while DeJohn finished with three goals for Jamesville-DeWitt. Goalie Alex Jorgensen turned away 10 shots for the Red Rams (16-2).

Ben Koster accounted for five goals and one assist, and Rob Grimm added two goals and two assists for the Comets. Kyle Gaebel made 15 saves for Carthage (15-2), which led 6-5 at halftime.

The Comets are ranked fifth in the state, while Jamesville-DeWitt is No. 4.

IHC 15, LOWVILLE 9

Tyler Prevost buried five goals and assisted on another as the Cavaliers pulled away from the Red Raiders for a Frontier League win in Watertown.

Rob Kunz racked up three goals and an assist for Immaculate Heart Central (8-8 overall, 6-4 league), and Colin Caldwell also scored three times.

Matt Graveley led all scorers with six goals for Lowville (6-10, 3-7).

MASSENA 10,

COLTON-PIERREPONT 2

Matt Thompson scored three goals and Josh Centrella added two goals with two assists to lead Massena (7-8, 5-6) past the Colts in a Northern Athletic Conference East Division game in Colton.

Antonio O'Geen added two goals and one assist, and Sterling Beck scored two goals for the Red Raiders.

Gavin Dominy scored both goals for the Colts (0-11).

GIRLS LACROSSE

GENERAL BROWN 9,

SOUTH JEFFERSON 6

Samantha Roukous notched a game-best five goals to propel the Lions to a Frontier League win over the Spartans in Dexter.

Nichole Eamer chipped in two goals for General Brown (8-8, 3-6), and Soo Kim collected 10 saves.

Maria Behling's three goals led the way for South Jefferson (8-8, 2-6).

CARTHAGE 20, CBA 19

Katherine DeRonda supplied a season-high 12 points on five goals and seven assists as the Comets held on to defeat the Brothers in a nonleague matchup in Syracuse.

Katie Ferris followed with five goals and an assist for Carthage (13-3), and Joelle Percy deposited four goals.

Brittany Brigandi scored a game-high nine goals and added two assists to pace Christian Brothers Academy.

INDIAN RIVER 12, MASSENA 4

Teddi Filiatrault buried five goals and assisted on another to lead the Warriors during a nonleague game at Philadelphia.

Alissa Olsen and Chelsea Boshart each contributed three goals and one assist for Indian River (4-11).

Four different players notched goals for the Red Raiders (2-12).

IHC 10, JORDAN-ELBRIDGE 8

Angela Vespa netted four goals and added one assist as the host Cavaliers picked up a nonleague win over the Eagles.

Tara Gervera supplied two goals and an assist for Immaculate Heart Central (7-9), and Elysa Doldo chipped in a goal and two assists.

Emily Dillon led Jordan-Elbridge with four goals and an assist.

SOFTBALL

SACKETS HARBOR 4, LAFARGEVILLE 1

Shawnee Rice registered seven strikeouts and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Patriots dropped the Red Knights in a Frontier League "D" Division game in Sackets Harbor.

After walking the first LaFargeville batter in the seventh inning, Rice surrendered a single to Kendra Cole, but it was the only hit recorded by the Red Knights (9-6, 7-6).

Sarah Maxon went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth inning for Sackets Harbor (13-7, 11-3). She finished with three RBIs.

BASEBALL

SACKETS HARBOR 2, LAFARGEVILLE 1

Gage LeClair singled in the bottom of the seventh inning, advanced to third base on a throwing error, and scored on a passed ball to give the Patriots a Frontier League "D" Division win over the Red Knights in Sackets Harbor.

Jake Simmons worked Sackets Harbor (12-5, 11-3) out of a major jam in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Simmons struck out the next three batters. He finished with 12 strikeouts.

Brandon Davis and Matt Schofield each collected two hits to lead LaFargeville (5-10, 3-8).

GOLF

THREE CYCLONES ADVANCE

Three members of the Watertown golf team earned advancing scores during the Class A-2 qualifier at Thendara Golf Club in Thendara.

Tyler Woodward (85), Michael Bufalini (86) and Drew Laemmmermann (87) will each play in Thursday's Class A-2 finals at Seven Oaks Golf Course at Colgate University in Hamilton.

Watertown placed fifth in the team standings with a score of 450. Whitesboro (422) took first place.

■ Alexandria finished second in the Class D event at Twin Ponds Golf Club in New York Mills.

The Purple Ghosts finished with 435 strokes, eight behind winner Remsen. Vincent Hoover led Alexandria with a 13-over-par 83, good for fourth place. John Downey was sixth with an 85, Shawn Thomas placed seventh with an 86, Joshua Slocum was ninth with a 90, and Tim Reddick tied for 10th with a 91.

Those four, along with Sackets Harbor's Erik Fingar (91), advanced to the Section 3 individual tournament, which begins Thursday at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton.

■ Thousand Islands finished second behind Cooperstown in the Class C-2 qualifier at Barker Brooks Golf Course in Oriskany Falls. Daniel Bowman shot an 88 for Thousand Islands.

Christian Clere shot an 84 while Kevin Trimper an 86 and Jarad Lehman an 88 for Immaculate Heart.

In Class C-1, Jake Newton shot an 85 for Lowville.

■ Carthage's Mike Murphy shot an 88 to qualify for the Section 3 tournament during the Class B1 event at Radisson Greens in Baldwinsville.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

OFA 146, GOUVERNEUR 95

Jake Fredericks won four individual events to lead the Blue Devils past Gouverneur (3-2) in a Northern Athletic Conference meet in Ogdensburg.
