Massena down to one cab service
TUESDAY, MAY 20, 2008

MASSENA — Econo Taxi has gone out of business, leaving the village with a single cab service.

"We are very concerned," Mayor Randy G. DeLosh said. "We know a lot of our residents require transportation and use the taxi services."

With Econo Taxi's unheralded demise, only Massena Taxi, owned by Douglas F. LaPradd, remains to provide cab service to the village. Mr. LaPradd did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Mr. DeLosh said he hopes somebody else will come in to bolster the village's taxi service offerings, but concedes the recent sharp increases in fuel costs may make that unlikely.

Considering the rising gas prices, the village trustees may have to act if the village is going to continue to have taxicab service, Mr. DeLosh said.

That most likely would mean raising the maximum taxicab rate from the current $5.25. The trustees last raised the rate in 2004.

"In light of that, is that perhaps something the trustees may have to look at again?" Mr. DeLosh said. "I would tend to think 'yes,' based on where gas prices are right now."
