The Flower Memorial Library Board of Trustees will discuss the library survey of the community and overdue items at the June meeting.
The board had only six of the 10 members present at its meeting Tuesday and tabled both discussions.
The survey ran mid-February through mid-March and showed that many patrons want to see the library open Sunday. At the June meeting, trustees will review the survey results and should make a decision on how to proceed.
Last month, library Director Barbara J. Wheeler announced that 20 percent, or 5,773, of library patrons owe $5 or more in overdue charges. Of those, 670 owe more than $50, 135 owe $100 to $200, 23 owe $200 to $300, four owe $300 to $400 and one person owes $432.
The Watertown City Council recommended last week that the library increase late fees. Mrs. Wheeler said the board is weighing many options such as publishing the names of the scofflaws, suing them in small-claims court or limiting the number of items a patron can check out.
The matter also will be discussed at the June meeting.
In other library news, two new trustees were appointed at the May 5 meeting of the City Council.
Stephen J. Bradley, former city councilman and liaison to the library, will begin work as a trustee immediately. He is taking the seat of Mark G. Gebo, who recently resigned as trustee because he moved outside of the city. Mr. Bradley's term expires Dec. 31, 2009. Keith B. Caughlin, chairman of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization, will take over the seat of Jayn M. Graves in January.
