CLAYTON — Two friends were killed in a single-car accident early Sunday on County Route 11; state police are now asking the public for clues on where the two were before the crash.
Troopers said Jordan M. Houghton, 17, of County Route 54, town of Brownville, and Maxwell Z. Zeigler, 20, Swart Avenue, Clayton, were killed as their car smashed into trees off the north shoulder of the road.
Police said Mr. Houghton overcorrected his car when it veered off the south side of the roadway, causing it to cross the westbound lane and drive off the north side of the road. Troopers said the 2008 Toyota Yaris then struck several trees, became airborne, and rolled back across both lanes of Route 11. It ended up lodged against trees off the road's south shoulder, they said.
The pair were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Robert Kasulki of the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office.
State police are asking anyone who knew of the friends' whereabouts before the crash to call their Watertown barracks at 782-2112. WWNY-TV 7 reported Sunday that state police believe the pair were drinking at a house party in Alexandria Bay. The TV station also said troopers are looking for the driver of a maroon GMC Yukon or Sierra made between 1994 and 1999, which crashed nearby. It is unclear if the two accidents are related.
Also responding were the Depauville, Clayton and LaFargeville fire departments, the Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
Mr. Houghton was a former Thousand Islands High School student who attended as recently as this past fall. Mr. Zeigler was a 2006 graduate of the same school. Thousand Islands Superintendent John E. Slattery said counselors will be available for grieving students at the high school today.
