SYRACUSE — The Syracuse University men's lacrosse team will face Notre Dame at 3 p.m. Sunday in the NCAA Division I Tournament quarterfinals at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca.

The matchup between the third-seeded Orange (13-2) and the No. 6 Irish (14-2) will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The last time the two teams faced off in the tournament was in the national semifinals in 2001, which was their first-ever meeting. SU won the game 12-5.

SU is aiming for an NCAA-record 10th national championship. The Orange hammered Canisius, 20-3, in an opening-round tournament game Sunday in Syracuse. Notre Dame edged Colgate 8-7 in overtime in its first-round matchup.

■ Top-ranked Duke (16-1) will play unranked Ohio State (11-5) at noon in an earlier quarterfinal game in Ithaca. Carthage native Mario Ventiquattro is a sophomore attacker for the Buckeyes. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPNU.

WOMEN'S CREW

SLU EARNS NCAA BID

The NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Committee announced Tuesday that St. Lawrence University's women's crew will be one of the seven schools making up the 2008 national championship field.

This is the first time in the school's history that the women's team has been invited to the NCAA championships. St. Lawrence captured its first Liberty League title this season to help earn the bid.

The Saints will compete from May 30 through June 1 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California.

BASKETBALL

CLARKSON NAMES NEW ASSISTANTS

Paul Halas was named as men's basketball assistant coach while John Hampton was hired as women's basketball assistant coach at Clarkson University.

Halas finished the 2007-08 season as the assistant coach for Drew University under former Clarkson men's basketball coach Walt Townes. As a senior at Rensselaer in 2005-06, Halas averaged 7.0 points per game and ranked in the top-six in Liberty League 3-point field goal percentage.

Hampton is a graduate of Mansfield University last May and averaged 11.8 points per game during his senior season. He was selected as a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all-star for his senior efforts.

NCAA HAS NEW INFO ON MAYO

Saying the NCAA has "new information," president Myles Brand promised to investigate former Southern California basketball star O.J. Mayo, who allegedly received thousands of dollars in gifts from money given to an event promoter by a sports agency.

On Sunday, ESPN reported that Bill Duffy Associates provided Rodney Guillory with about $200,000 before Mayo arrived at USC. Louis Johnson, a former associate of Mayo's, told "Outside the Lines" that Mayo received about $30,000 and other benefits from Guillory while in high school and during his one season at USC.

Mayo declared for the NBA draft after the season and hired BDA Sports' Calvin Andrews as his agent.

Brand, speaking Tuesday in Houston to kick off this week's Division II National Championships Festival, said that "our enforcement division has new information" about Mayo's case "and as a matter of fact, when we have new information on any case, we will investigate."

DUQUESNE'S MENSAH TO ENTER DRAFT

Kojo Mensah, a junior guard who transferred to Duquesne University from Siena, is passing up his final season of eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-1 Mensah decided to leave school even though he appears to have little to no chance of being drafted. He averaged 12.1 points and shot 38 percent in his lone season at Duquesne.
