Spartans' Harrington headed to Houghton

TRACK AND FIELD

South Jefferson's Than Harrington signed a letter of intent to compete for Houghton College, an NAIA school, in the fall. Harrington is a member of the Spartans' track and field team and competes in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Harrington set the indoor record for hammer throw and was selected as South Jefferson's most-valuable field athlete. Last season Harrington was second in the Frontier League and fourth in Section 3 in the shot put. Harrington also received a silver medal at the AAU Regional Qualifier.

Harrington plans to pursue an education major.

Ex- Sox slugger Rice to speak at Wizards' event

The Watertown Wizards announced Tuesday that former Boston Red Sox outfielder Jim Rice will be the guest speaker at the team's first annual kickoff dinner on June 2.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Black River Valley Club. For ticket and sponsorship information, please contact the Wizards' box office at 782-4303.

Rice spent his entire 16-year career in Boston. He boasts a career .298 batting average, and he recorded 382 home runs and over 1,400 RBIs. He was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1978. He batted .315 and set career highs in homers (46), hits (213), RBIs (139) and runs scored (121).
