Diplomacy in Zimbabwe
WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2008

Zimbabwe is a country out of control, totally misgoverned. Tensions have been high in the African nation since the March 29 presidential elections.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has claimed victory in the contest, but the government of dictator Robert Mugabe said that the opposition did not win enough votes to avoid a second round against him.

Most recently, Zimbabwe has been harassing diplomats, including the U.S. ambassador.

When diplomats attempted to investigate allegations of torture, they were confronted by Zimbabwean police. One officer threatened to hit the U.S. ambassador with his car, the Associated Press reported.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the incident reflects an atmosphere where it is almost impossible for citizens to speak out against authorities.
