James C. Eastman, 64, Mannsville, died at about 10 a.m. Monday when he was run over by a bulldozer at Hanson Aggregates Inc., 25133 Route 3, town of Pamelia.
State police said Mr. Eastman was operating a 1985 John Deere bulldozer at the quarry to construct a road from a 75-foot elevation down to a landing area. As he was pushing material down a partially constructed ramp, the bulldozer went past the point of the filled material and dropped about eight feet, partially ejecting him.
He was run over by the bulldozer's left track. The machine continued moving about 250 feet, pushing through construction debris and coming to rest against a tree.
The city of Watertown Fire Department, North Pole Fire Department and Guilfoyle Ambulance Service also responded. Police said the investigation is continuing. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration also is conducting an investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
