OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg City Council is expected Monday night to approve spending up to $117,000 for rehabilitation work on the Spring Street bridge.
The Public Works Department already has $50,000 for work on the bridge, leaving a funding shortfall of about $67,000.
The shortfall will be made up by transferring money from the city's general fund.
The council will vote to award Lupini Construction of New York Mills the bridge rehab contract at its 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
Public Works Director Kit W. Smith said recently an engineering survey found the bridge needed some minor structural repairs.
The $50,000 allocated for work on the bridge this year was for painting the structure over the Oswegatchie River.
The $151,240 contract called for nearly $40,000 of it to be spent on controlling traffic while the rehab work is taking place.
City Manager Arthur J. Sciorra said Friday the bridge will be closed off to vehicle traffic but will remain open to pedestrians while the repairs are underway.
The nearly $40,000 savings could be put toward painting the bridge sometime in the next year or so, according to Mr. Sciorra.
The council also will call for public hearings May 27 to consider local laws on banning smoking in city parks and recreational facilities and appointing alternate members for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.
The councilors also could approve submitting a $5,000 grant application for the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Urban and Community Forestry program.
The program funds replacing dead or diseased trees. The city's share to cover the grant is $2,500.
