HENDERSON — State police said a Fort Drum man charged with driving while intoxicated Wednesday was driving a pickup without the owner's permission and was wanted on an outstanding grand larceny charge from February.
Donald J. Austin, 20, of 10224 N. Riva Ridge Loop, now is jailed at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Troopers said Mr. Austin crashed the pickup into a ditch shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday after running the stop sign on Route 152 at Route 178. He then left the scene with the damaged vehicle and was stopped by a trooper on Route 178.
While the trooper was pulled over with Mr. Austin, police said, James L. Dovel, 22, Fort Drum, called the Watertown office to report that his truck had been stolen.
Mr. Austin was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a personal-injury accident and failure to stop at a stop sign. His blood alcohol content was 0.09 percent, police said. Under state law, a reading of 0.08 percent or more constitutes intoxication.
One of Mr. Austin's two passengers, Natasha Hale, suffered minor injuries and was taken by anbulance to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
Troopers said the fourth-degree grand larceny charge stems from Mr. Austin allegedly issuing a $1,753.18 check drawn on a closed account to Widrick Auto Sales, 19079 Route 11, for a rental vehicle on Feb. 21. Mr. Austin now awaits grand jury action in Jefferson County Court.
