Jefferson Community College pitcher Luis Castillo was announced as Mid-State Athletic Conference co-player of the year Thursday.
Castillo, from Burlington, Ontario, shared the award with Corning CC's Dan Telehany. Castillo, in his second season with the Cannoneers, led the team in most pitching categories, recording 74 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched. Castillo went 4-2 with a 1.53 earned run average. He walked just 15 batters and allowed 49 hits.
Former Heuvelton player Ronnie Sellers, an infielder, also made the all-Mid-State team for JCC.
CLARKSON, SLU PLAYERS HONORED
Clarkson junior outfielder Cale Giroux was named to the Liberty League first team Thursday.
Giroux led the everyday starters with a .455 batting average over 66 at-bats and 24 games for the Golden Knights.
Matt Holiday, Greg Chojecki and Brett Peplowski earned Liberty League second-team honors. Former Norwood-Norfolk standout Mike Bresett gained honorable mention. Joining him were Matt Giordano and Jake Groszewski.
Sophomore Ryan Duff, senior Christian Spicer and freshman Chris Cook of St. Lawrence University made the Liberty League second-team list.
Duff batted .360 this season and finished second on the team in RBIs with 23. Spicer, a former Immaculate Heart player, led the team in RBIs with 26 and sported a .341 batting average. Pitcher Chris Cook went 5-1 in 10 appearances with a 4.34 ERA.
Senior shortstop Andrew Ford and senior catcher Joel Kocan were named to the honorable-mention list.
DAILY MAKES ALL-STAR TEAM
Jake Daily, a former Immaculate Heart Central player, was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference's honorable-mention baseball team.
Dailey is a senior second baseman for Cazenovia College. He led the team in doubles with 13 and added a .299 batting average with 29 hits and 10 RBIs. He also stole 27 bases in 30 attempts.
Cazenovia won the regular-season title with a 13-1 mark.
MARRA GUIDES WINNER
Watertown native Mike Marra coached Sullivan County Community College to its first NJCAA Region 15 title. Marra's club, seeded just fourth in the tournament, went 3-0, including a 12-3 win over Dutchess CC in the deciding game.
Sullivan (17-17) begins play in the Northeast District tournament today against Region 3 champion Monroe CC at Rockland CC.
Sullivan reinstated baseball in 2006 after dropping the program in 1986. Marra is also the school's assistant athletic director.
GOLF
SAINTS TO PLAY IN NCAAS
The St. Lawrence University women's golf team is one of 20 squads to receive bids to play in the NCAA Division III championships slated for Tuesday through Friday in Waverly, Iowa.
The Saints are ranked 20th in the latest coaches poll and are seeded 18th in the tournament. One of four teams selected from the Northeast, the Saints are led by senior Kim Sikule, sophomores Kristen Beretta and Caitlyn Cunningham, and first-year players Alair Muzzatti and Casey Lawton.
Beretta and Muzzatti lead the Saints with 84.4 and 85.5 averages, respectively.
The Saints, led by coach Mary Lawrence, will play at the Centennial Oaks Golf Course. The tournament is hosted by Wartburg College.
ROBERTS NABS HONORS
Freshman golfer Wes Roberts was picked as the Jefferson Community College co-Athlete of the Week following two noteworthy performances.
Roberts, a South Jefferson product, captured the Mid-State Athletic Conference championship at the Red Baron Invitational with a low score of 78. He also finished tied for third in the Tompkins Cortland Community College Tournament. He carries a scoring average of 80.25.
■ Lowville's Adam VanBrocklin, a senior at SUNY Cobleskill, took eighth in the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational on April 27. VanBrocklin finished second on the team with a round of 80 as Cobleskill finished third.
MEN'S LACROSSE
RIVERS HONORED BY CONFERENCE
Ex-Watertown High school standout Adam Rivers was named to the first team for the Mid-State Athletic Conference on Thursday.
Rivers, in his second season for Onondaga Community College, was one of three defensemen on the team. JCC defenseman Casey Dickinson also was selected.
JCC's Sean McAuliffe, a former Watertown High player, made the second team at attack. JCC's Devin Heldt was named the second-team goalie.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
STAAB MAKES ALL-REGION
Former Carthage player Theresa Staab, a midfielder for Jefferson CC, was selected to the all-Region 3 team Thursday. Staab made the first team.
JCC teammates Maria Martusewicz, a midfielder, and Sara Gallagher, a midfielder, and Kim Delucca, a defender, each made the second team.
Jolene Quinta, a former General Brown player who competes for Herkimer County CC, also made the second team.
PARKER PICKED FOR SUNYAC TEAM
Former Watertown High school athlete Ashley Parker was one of four Buffalo State players to make the SUNYAC all-conference team. It's the most players Buffalo State has placed on the team in program history.
Parker, a senior defender, won conference honors for the third time, making the first team for the second time in hear career. A team captain, Parker led the Bengals with 41 ground balls and 30 forced turnovers. She started all 13 games.
SOFTBALL
SAINTS NAMED ALL-LEAGUE
St. Lawrence sophomores Molly Swan and Jessica Manderfield each made the second team as Liberty League conference honors were released Thursday.
Swan, from Clifton Park, led the Saints in batting average (.359), runs (13), hits (33), extra-base hits (10) and RBIs (14). Manderfield, from Davisburg, Mich., hit .326 and made the second team for a second straight year.
Melissa Rogers, a freshman from Clarence, was named to the honorable mention team.
CANNONEERS HONORED
Jefferson Community College's Eliza Gaines and Stacey Finley were each named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference team on Thursday.
Gaines and Finley both were named as infielders. Gaines, a former Copenhagen player, made it on the team for the second straight season.
Both players were named to the second team for the Region 3, Division III team.
DUFFANY EARNS WEEKLY HONOR
St. Lawrence freshman pitcher Rachel Duffany was selected as the Liberty League co-Rookie of the Week for the week of April 21.
Duffany, a Watertown native, won four of her last six games for the Saints, including two victories over Skidmore College. She made a team-high 18 appearances and 15 starts this season.
■ Freshman Emily Patterson was chosen as a Jefferson Community College co-Athlete of the Week. During an eight-game hitting streak, the General Brown graduate batted .411 and collected seven RBIs.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY
SAINTS NAME CAPTAINS
Former St. Lawrence Central standout Marianna Locke was named St. Lawrence University captain for the 2008-09 season.
Locke, a junior, has 53 goals and 38 assists in her Saints career and will lead the team in head coach Chris Wells's first season.
Juniors Alison Domenico, Lisa Batchelor and Carson Duggan were named assistant captains.
The Saints also distributed season awards, naming Sabrina Harbec the Bernie A. McKinnon Most Valuable Player for the third straight season. Meaghan Guckian received the Scholar-Athlete Award, and Sarah Callan received the 7th Player Award.
Brittaney Maschmeyer won the Most Improved Player award, and Karell Emard was named Rookie of the Year. Locke won the Martha Middendorf Sportsmanship Award and Domenico the Best Defensive Player Award.
