FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2008

POTSDAM — Nearly 600 Clarkson University students will be granted bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the university's commencement ceremonies Sunday.

The weekend also will be marked by the commissioning of Army and Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets Saturday.

Two people will receive honorary degrees and address students, families and guests:

Ray C. Anderson is founder and chairman of Interface Inc., which is the world's largest producer of commercial floor coverings. He has taken Interface nearly 50 percent toward his vision of "Mission Zero," the company's promise to eliminate any negative impact it may have on the environment, by the year 2020, through the redesign of processes and products.

Sophie V. Vandebroek is Xerox's chief technology officer and president of the Xerox Innovation Group. She oversees Xerox's worldwide research centers and works with children, especially girls, to encourage them to enter careers in science and engineering.

During the commencement ceremony, two faculty members will be honored with the John W. Graham Jr. Faculty Research Award and the Clarkson University Distinguished Teaching Award. A retiring Clarkson faculty member also will be named professor emeritus in recognition and appreciation of his years of service to the university.

The Levinus Clarkson Award and the Frederica Clarkson Award will be bestowed upon two students who have demonstrated unsurpassed scholarship and promise of outstanding academic achievement.
