ALEXANDRIA BAY — With a record-breaking number of weddings booked, Boldt Castle on Heart Island is set to open for the season Saturday.

So far, 91 weddings are booked for the season at the historic attraction. The record, set last year, is 90 weddings.

"We just had two callbacks for a wedding this season. So by the end of the week it may be more," said Shane K. Sanford, operations manager of Boldt Castle.

Last year, the castle admitted about 150,000 visitors, making it the 14th most-visited historic house museum in the U.S., according to the Almanac of Architecture and Design.

But with more weddings and new facilities, the staff is expecting even more business this year.

"The Canadian dollar is getting stronger and we're hoping that we will see more Canadian visitation this year," Mr. Sanford said.

He said the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority staff just finished the 1,040-square-foot dining room with hardwood flooring, red mahogany wainscoting with fabric inlays, ornate red mahogany ceiling beams, two brass chandeliers and Boldt family furnishings.

Mr. Sanford said the TIBA, which operates the castle, has been restoring the historic attraction for a long time.

"For the last 31 years, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority has been rehabilitating it and completing it," he said.

He said the authority spent more than $23 million in renovations while 5.5 million people have visited the castle over the past 31 years.

"The Boldt Castle has an incalculable value for the region's tourism industry," Mr. Sanford said.

The authority staff this year is reconstructing the second-floor bedroom of George Boldt, who halted construction on the castle after his wife, Louise, died in 1904.

The castle will be open daily through Oct. 13 and will reopen for the weekend of Oct. 18 and 19.

The Boldt Castle Yacht House will open May 17 and be open daily through Sept. 28.
