CASTORLAND — Walter S. Thompson, 89, Church Street, died Tuesday evening at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville.

Mr. Thompson retired from Climax Manufacturing in 1981, as foreman of the packing and stocking department.

Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Montague, son of Charles and Susan Garnsey Thompson, he attended Lowville Academy.

He married Rosella Zehr on May 30, 1945, at the Lowville Methodist Church parsonage with the Rev. Carlton J. Frazier officiating.

Mr. Thompson served in the Army from 1942 to 1943.

Mr. Thompson attended Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg, and was a member of Karcher & Kohler American Legion Post 850, Castorland, a member and past chief of Castorland Fire Department, and a member of Senior Citizen's Golf Club at Cedar's Golf Course. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, working with wood and making wooden toys.

Surviving besides his wife, of Lewis County Health Care Facility, are a son, Byron J., Castorland; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Rodney Ward, Manlius; three grandsons and a niece.

Two brothers, William and Earl, died before him.

The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville, with the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Castorland Union Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
