MASSENA — The village Department of Public Works got the go-ahead Tuesday to pave additional roads with $100,000 to be taken from this year's fund balance.

DPW Superintendent Hassan A. Fayad was given discretion as to just which roadways would be paved.

Mr. Fayad also stressed that the paving should be contracted out so that DPW crews would not have to be used and taken away from other projects.

An option brought up was to repave a 400-foot section of North Main Street, which will undergo replacement of a 10-foot diameter clay sewer pipe that failed. The pipe is a main carrier line for Orchard, Martin and Haskell streets and a portion of the North Main Street area.

The sewer replacement, which trustees agreed to put out to bid, will be paid for with money from the village's Sanitary Sewer Capital Sewer Fund account, which was specifically developed for that kind of work.

In other action Tuesday evening, the trustees:

■ Authorized the re-levy to the June village tax roll of $397,516 in unpaid sewer, water, trash and other charges, plus penalties. The village has $157,679 in unpaid sewer-use charges and penalties, $123,389 in unpaid water charges and penalties and $116,448 in unpaid trash collection and other charges plus penalties.

■ Approved a tax warrant of $4,866,144, which will be collected in June. The warrant comprises $4,468,629 from the current budget; $2,527 for charges for services; $123,389 for re-levied water rents and charges; $157,679 for re-levied sewer rents and charges; and $113,921 for re-levied garbage charges.

■ Approved a fire protection agreement with the Massena Volunteer Fire Department.
